Ragamala Music and Dance Theater bridges the gap between ancient and modern cultures, exploring a unique style of living poetry for the stage. Rooted in Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from southern India, Ragamala blends dance, music, and poetry.

Sva ("vital force") combines Ragamala's complex rhythmic structures and dynamic athleticism with the thundering percussion and stunning physicality of Wadaiko Ensemble, an internationally celebrated troupe of Japanese taiko drummers.

"An entertaining, sublime dance exhibition. Juxtaposed against the powerful rhythms of Tokara's drums, [Ragamala's] sharp, subtle gestures become graspingly beautiful."                                  -- Time Out New York

“Ragamala’s forays into cross-cultural dance are increasingly fascinating, drawing connections between the elegantly sumptuous, percussively expressive style of its classic dance and the dances of other cultures.”

—Mike Steele, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Ragamala's work pulsates with rhythmic excitement and visceral narration of stories both ancient and modern. The gods would have to be crazy not to love this."  —Linda Shapiro,  St. Paul Pioneer Press

[Ranee] Ramaswamy choreographs many of the pieces and dances almost all of them, barely breaking a sweat…if [her] vision came true, Indian dance can be as diverse as the world as a whole."

Lauren Heist, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"It’s not often that so much varied talent converges on one stage.... It’s hard to imagine a better example of collaborative and multicultural work."

Kim Surkan, Minnesota Artists Online

"The combined effect of Ragamala’s musicians, dancers, and painter is mesmerizing, but the seeming effortlessness in which they produce such beauty is an illusion.”

—Laura F. Gross, Minnesota’s Entertainment Showcase

The presentation of Ragamala Music and Dance Theater was made possible by the MetLife Community Connections Fund of the National Dance Project, a program administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.  Major support for the National Dance Project is also provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from the Ford Foundation and the Andrew Mellon Foundation.
