  • The Poway Center for the Performing Arts (POW!) Foundation is committed to keeping the Arts alive in our community. We are proud to introduce our Student Performer of the Month Program, an opportunity to recognize student performers of exceptional talent.The Student Performer of the Month program is presented as part of the POW! Foundation's Arts in Education Initiative.
  • Beginning in January, 2011, the POW! Foundation will recognize three students or student groups, each month, from the Elementary, Middle and High School Levels.Students and student groups can be from any of the performing arts disciplines: dance, music, theater and more.
  • The Arts in Education Committee will solicit nominations from local arts teachers, review the submissions, and select students and/or student groups from the Poway Unified School District to feature. Submissions must come from a Performing Arts Teacher in the Poway Unified School District.

  • Brice A. Burton
Brice Student Performer
  • Brice, a senior at Westview High School and already accepted at USC, is a percussionist performs with the Westview High School Wind Ensemble and Pit Orchestra and was a past member of the Schools Jazz Ensemble and Marching Band. Outside of his school ensembles, he has been a member of the San Diego Youth Symphony since 2003 participating in SDYS’s Philharmonia, Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia ensembles.
  • Accepted by audition via CD to the intensive Julliard Summer Percussion Seminars in 2009 and 2010, he participated in the two-week residential with daily master classes, workshops, ear training, lectures, concerts and performances.
  • He studies with Greg Cohen, Principal Percussionist with the San Diego Symphony and has taken a myriad of master classes and workshops studying timpani, glockenspiel, xylophone, triangle, snare drum and tambourine and broadening his repertoire in Afro Cuban and Latin

  • Justin Yee, Poway High School
Brice Student Performer
  • Justin Yee, a senior at Poway High School, was a Band Buddy when he was a fifth grader, and Michael Bowersox was his mentor. He enjoyed playing with this high school student so much, and was inspired by Michael's playing, and his sage, 10th grade wisdom. He never forgot that, and had always looked forward to the chance to be a High School Band Buddy himself. He wanted to pay it forward. He now teaches saxophone to a Fifth Grade Student on a weekly basis.
  • Justin, who holds a 4.2 GPA, performs on the Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Piano, currently learning to play the Flute. He has played alto saxophone in the Emerald Brigade Marching Band for four years and has been Emerald Brigade Saxophone Section Leader for two years. He participated in the Poway High School Wind Symphony for three years and Jazz Band for four years where he has been the Lead Alto Sax in Jazz Band for.
  • He was accepted to UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside and is waiting to hear from UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and Stanford. He plans to major in Biological Sciences and Minor in Music (Jazz Studies).

  • Kristen Lo
Brice Student Performer
  • Kristen, a kindergartner at Deer Canyon Elementary has a passion for the performing arts.. all at the age of five. She loves drawing, singing and playing music. So fond of creating artwork, she was enrolled in an art lessons and her creations are quite impressive considering her young age. She is studying piano and has mastered more than 25 songs. Kristen will be in the school's talent show in the spring and is anxiously awaiting joining the Deer Canyon Choir, a program for older students.
